Our environmental interventions in San Gavino Monreale
Remediation to give new value to a disused area.
San Gavino Monreale, our commitment for the environmental management of the site
The San Gavino Monreale plant, founded in 1930 by the consortium between the Monteponi and Montevecchio companies (part of the Montecatini group) to refine lead, merged in Samim (part of the Eni group) in 1978 as part of the handover of mining and metallurgical activities for non-ferrous metals as per law 279/78.
The area we currently own comprises a large entrance, a former landfill where the waste from the industrial activities decommissioned in the late 1980s was left, and a green area.
The environmental interventions approved to date are managed under a MISE (Emergency Safety Measures) scheme. The preliminary investigation concerning the remediation project for the entire site, considered approvable in 2009, was suspended following an appeal to the Regional Administrative Court (TAR), and subsequently to the Council of State, regarding the 2016 municipal decision that considered non eligible some of the planned interventions.
With the conclusion of the legal proceedings and the annulment of the Municipality's decision, the process was reactivated. In 2020, following a technical discussion with the relevant authorities, we presented the Operative remediation plan and Permanent safety measures; and in 2022, the feasibility study for the inclusion as requested by the authorities, of a designated landfill in the diaphragm area was submitted to the ministry of the Environment, in compliance with the requirements of Legislative Decree 36/03 and subsequent amendments.
In December 2024, to implement the observations and inputs of the relevant authorities regarding the feasibility study, we introduced a request to the ministry of the Environment for the approval of the Operative remediation project and Permanent Safety Measures with an allocated landfill for the San Gavino site. As of 31 December 2024, we have incurred environmental costs for our areas amounting to €102 million.
