Our environmental interventions in Sa Canna

Post-operational environmental interventions and the agreement with the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara returned the area to public use.

Sa Canna, our commitment for the environmental management of the site

The Acqua Sa Canna site, located in the southwestern coastal region of Sardinia, in the municipality of Gonnesa, included the Acqua Sa Canna 1 and Acqua Sa Canna 2 Guroneddu landfills where waste from the metalworks at Portovesme and San Gavino Monreale was disposed of. The Acqua Sa Canna 1 landfill was permanently closed in 2001, while Acqua Sa Canna 2 ceased operations in 2003. As Eni Rewind, we took over the site in 2005, following the incorporation of the Ambiente company, and managed the post-operative monitoring activities, which were completed in 2021. Since 2018, with a view to giving renewed value to the area, we have signed an agreement with the Fondazione Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, thanks to which pilgrims and hikers can now explore the Acqua Sa Canna area that is part of the tourist-religious itinerary marked by various testimonies to Sardinia's mining history. As of 31 December 2024, we have incurred environmental costs for our areas amounting to €20 million.

Eni Rewind takes over the site

After the incorporation of the Ambiente company, Eni Rewind became the owner of the site, taking over the management of post-operative monitoring.

Acqua Sa Canna 1 was permanently closed in 2001 while Acqua Sa Canna 2 ceased operations in 2003, after ensuring the continuity of plants waste disposal.

Our activities in Acqua Sa Canna

The project for the closure of the Acqua Sa Canna 1 landfill included covering waste, waterproofing the top area, environmental restoration, and planting Mediterranean shrub species, in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Today, the top area has a panoramic viewing point offering sights of the western coast of Sulcis. For the Acqua Sa Canna 2 Guroneddu, the activities related to its closure included covering the top of the waste by reprofiling and the installation of an HDPE sheet, as well as installing piezometers.

As Eni Rewind, we performed routine post-operative maintenance and a monitoring plan which includes meteorological and particles data collection, planimetric and altimetric surveys, groundwater sampling and analysis from piezometers, air, vegetation, soil, and water sampling, and inclinometer surveys. Post-operative management was completed in 2021, and we are now monitoring, sampling, and analysing groundwater on a regular basis.

Acqua Sa Canna in the Cammino Minerario

In 2018, we signed an agreement with the Santa Barbara Cammino Minerario Foundation to valorise the former landfill site, located in the Sulcis Iglesiente Guspinese area. Under the agreement, we committed to establishing free right of way for thirty years and to ensuring the safety of pilgrims and hikers crossing the panoramic viewpoint created on the summit of the former landfill. The new section of the historical-religious-cultural itinerary, which winds for approximately 400 km along ancient mining trails and places of worship dedicated to the miners' saint, was inaugurated in July 2019.
