Our capital of technical and scientific expertise is complemented by a network of strategic collaborations aimed at innovating and strengthening the integrated offer of solutions for the remediation and sustainable management of natural resources. Our partnerships involve universities, research centres and startups to test and implement new remediation technologies, as well as leading operators in the environmental sector to identify new business opportunities and create shared value.

Collaborations with universities and research centres

Developing increasingly efficient and sustainable solutions and overcoming any possible critical issues related to the methodology of interventions is one of our primary goals. In this perspective, we have built a network of partnerships with universities, research centres and innovative startups to test and implement new remediation technologies. At Eni Rewind we have a dedicated structure that focuses on technological innovation and carries out its work in conjunction with the laboratories of the Research Centres of San Donato Milanese and Novara and through collaborations with various Italian and foreign universities. From the Polytechnics of Milan and Turin to the Universities of Milan Bicocca, Rome Tor Vergata, Sapienza of Rome, Ca'Foscari of Venice and Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna, Pavia, Naples Federico II, to the National Research Council (CNR) and the National Interuniversity Consortium for Materials Science and Technology (INSTM): many alliances entered to support responsible technological development.

At the same time, we actively participate to European projects funded by the Horizon Europe programme or the LIFE Programme of the European Commission, as well as to the extended partnership RETURN Foundation (Multi-risk science for resilient communities under a changing climate) related to the PNRR Next Generation EU. The aim is to develop sustainable and technologically advanced solutions, working together with expert and qualified partners, both public and private.

Eni Rewind and NYMPHE: together for environmental sustainability

The European Project HORIZON NYMPHE (New system-driven bioremediation of polluted habitats and environment) is dedicated to the development of tailor-made strategies for the removal of contaminants through bioremediation techniques that leverage on the ability of micro and macro-organisms to collaborate with each other. The study plans to verify the methods of in situ stimulation of the microbial community (microbiome) with enzymes, biostimulants and microorganisms based on the specific contamination that enable to remediate and give new life to soils and waters with significant environmental contamination. At our site in Ferrara we have started field testing, implementing advanced strategies of Enhanced Natural Attenuation (ENA) to stimulate the natural degradation processes of contaminants found in the aquifer.

LIFE MySOIL project

The LIFE programme is the European financial instrument 2021-2027 for the environment and climate action that aims to contribute to the transition to a sustainable, circular and resource-efficient economy. We participate in the programme with the MySOIL project in collaboration with other partners. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the applicability of mycoremediation technology on a pilot scale for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from soils. This type of bioremediation, based on the use of fungal inoculum, could provide improved performance compared to conventional technologies, ensuring significantly lower energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as promoting the recovery of the treated soil.

RETURN Project

The RETURN Project (Multi-risk science for resilient communities under a changing climate) is based on an extended partnership with the aim of strengthening the research pipelines on environmental, natural and anthropogenic risks in Italy and promoting the application and leverage of technologies. The project, which involves 27 partners including public administration and private companies, aims to strengthen key skills, technology transfer and know-how through knowledge sharing. Eni Rewind brings together concrete examples of in situ application of technologies among the partners, in addition to consolidated experience in the environmental and sustainability fields.

Agreements and partnerships with the main operators of the environmental sector

From characterisation, to treatment and monitoring, to recovery and reuse: we know the value of soil and water resources and the importance of their sustainable management for the territories, too. Furthermore, we know that the development of a new economic model focused on reuse and the reduction of non-recoverable waste will depend on efficient management of the waste supply chain. In addition, in a market characterised by systematic infrastructural deficit, the realisation of new plants will enable to optimise waste management in terms of continuity and quality of service, logistics costs and environmental and economic impacts. A vision that has led us to sign important partnerships with the main companies of the sector in Italy, as well as other agreements around the world, with the aim of strengthening the integrated offer of solutions for the management of environmental resources.

Strategic alliances for an integrated services offer

Since 2023, we hold 30% of the share capital of LabAnalysis Environmental Science, a market leader in the environmental testing sector in Italy. A strategic alliance that enables us to leverage on the innovative technologies, advanced methodologies and the know-how of both companies to provide tailor-made solutions to new environmental challenges in the field of analysis.

With Herambiente, we work to identify plant solutions for the management of industrial waste. We have established the joint venture HEA, which is creating a cutting-edge environmental platform for the management of waste from environmental and productive activities in the Ponticelle industrial area in Ravenna. An important synergy that aims to make a concrete contribution to the structural lack of plants for the management of special waste in Italy and to maximise the recovery of materials and energy. The plant, which will manage up to 60 thousand tons/year of special waste, will be equipped with the best available technologies. Eni Rewind will be responsible for the procurement process of solid and liquid waste treatment services while Herambiente will manage the plant.

Since 2022, we collaborate with A2A for joint initiatives in the industrial waste sector with the aim of helping to fill the current management and infrastructure gaps characterising the Italian and European context.

With Iren we are exploring possible synergies in the use of plants and to optimise waste management from Eni's production and environmental activities.

Our network also includes local operators, such as Tecnoparco Valbasento, with which we have signed a long-term agreement for the management of water associated with hydrocarbon extraction. This solution allows us to reduce the distance for the delivery of this waste, with significant outcomes in terms of containing the emission impact associated with the transport of waste, and to contribute to the development of an important industrial entity in Basilicata.
