Remediation

We manage the entire remediation process during its every phase, from characterisation and risk analysis to support in the authorisation process with the relevant authorities, up to the design and implementation of the interventions, including final monitoring. We carry out emergency safety measures (MISE), operational safety measures (MISO), permanent safety measures (MISP) and soil and water reclamation, with a focus on sustainable and innovative solutions, many of which are developed in collaboration with universities and Eni research centres. We promote “in situ” remediation techniques in order to reduce the moving and disposal of soil and water resources, while ensuring compliance with programs and planned costs, through to the certification of completed remediation.

Giving new life to a territory means creating new environmental, social and economic opportunities. To do this, we plan the future reuse of the areas at the early stages of the remediation process, shaping it on the basis of development initiatives shared with local institutions and stakeholders. This approach is a key part of our integrated operating model that we use to oversee every phase of the process: from preliminary investigations to final certification.

Thanks to the experience gained in the field, in over 150 sites, with very different industrial backgrounds, today we are able to optimise the effectiveness and efficiency of our interventions, offering increasingly innovative solutions responding to the most complex design challenges. Our commitment is constant in ensuring sustainable management of soil, water and waste.

Soil is a limited resource as it cannot be reproduced. Our challenge is giving new life to decommissioned or no longer viable industrial sites with remediation interventions designed for possible reuse and productive requalification. Environmental remediation, in addition to eliminating contamination, makes brownfields usable again, for example to host plants for the production of energy from renewable sources or for the treatment and recycling of waste. Many areas that are located in places that are already anthropised and connected can therefore be recovered and allocated for new initiatives, therefore avoiding the consumption of new soil.

The development of renewable energy is a cornerstone of Eni's strategy for decarbonisation. As Eni Rewind, we contribute to the energy transition by making our disused areas available for the realisation of plants producing green energy, partly intended to provide for Eni's industrial assets necessities, while the excess is fed into the grid. This is the framework for the establishment of photovoltaic plants at the Eni Rewind sites of Assemini, Porto Torres, Gela, Porto Marghera and Ravenna, covering an area of ​​approximately 122 hectares and with an installed capacity of 72 MW. We are also designing Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plants at the sites of Porto Marghera, Gela, Assemini and Monte Sant'Angelo, photovoltaic plants at the sites of Monte Sant'Angelo, Brindisi, Porto Torres and Portoscuso and a wind farm in Porto Torres. In the coming years, the development of renewables will keep going thanks to the identification of over 1,500 hectares of Eni Rewind areas which, once the remediation activities are completed, could potentially be used for photovoltaic and wind power plants, with a potential installable capacity estimated at around 1 GW.
