Our contribution to the waste circular economy

The recovery of waste and industrial effluents is a pivotal objective of the circular economy that we intend to pursue in order to support a more sustainable development model. As Eni's environmental company, we manage the waste cycle produced by industrial activities and during remediation and decommissioning, guaranteeing constant control of the entire chain. In addition, we are engaged in building new plants for the treatment and recovery of waste, also through partnerships with the main Italian operators in the industry.

We adopt tailored solutions to increase the proportion of waste sent for recovery as an alternative to other disposal options, in line with the industry’s best practice. The daily control of the supply chain includes waste characterisation, the selection of the best recovery and disposal options as well as the adoption of planning systems for logistics - through dedicated softwares - which ensure optimisation in terms of costs and environmental impacts. Waste management is entrusted to a qualified network of over 90 plants, specialised by type, and followed by an internal team of about 110 specialists overseeing traceability and regulatory compliance. In addition, to limit the transport of waste by road and reduce the consequent environmental impact, we adopt logistics solutions that prioritises treatment plants that are close to the production site. In 2024, we managed a total of about 1.9 million tons of special waste, of which about 80% on behalf of Eni's other business lines and sent about 76% of recoverable waste for recovery. About 70% of the waste comes from industrial processes: in particular, liquids generated as part of mining and safety activities (58% of the total) or solids such as soil and rocks from remediation and demolition activities (30%).

We have set up a joint venture with Herambiente, HEA – Hera and Eni for the environment, for the realisation of a multifunctional platform for the pre-treatment and treatment of special waste in the industrial area of Ponticelle, close to the port of Ravenna. The aim is to make a concrete contribution to the structural lack of special waste management facilities in Italy and to minimise disposal, promoting the recovery of material and energy from the industrial waste collected. The plant, will manage up to 60 thousand tonnes per year of waste 45,000 of which hazardous, produced by industrial activities and environmental interventions, with priority given to local waste.

In the Ponticelle area, outside the Ravenna chemical plant, we are also building a soil biorecovery platform with a treatment capacity of up to 80,000 tons per year of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, primarily originating from the remediation of service stations. The process, based on aerobic biodegradation with indigenous microorganisms, will enable to reuse the treated soil, which will be reallocated to other service stations with ongoing environmental interventions, according to a circular model. To support the platform, a dedicated bio-laboratory will be operational on-site for analytical controls on the materials entering and exiting the plant, as well as for the continuous monitoring of the bioremediation processes.
